What is this project?
As the brand strategist for PORTA-CAMSS, an extension of CAMSS Shelters, I focused on developing the visual identity and strategy for the company, which specializes in high-quality, portable shelter products tailored to various needs. While I cannot disclose specific details about the product itself due to a non-disclosure agreement, I will outline my design process. The company’s mission was to create a reliable, efficient, and portable building solution that could quickly meet the needs of industries like military, healthcare, and construction. The goal was to craft a brand identity that reflected the company’s core values—strength, portability, and rapid deployment—while differentiating it from competitors in the modular building sector.
How did I prepare?
To prepare for this project, I began by conducting an in-depth interview with the CEO of CAMSS Shelters to gain insights into the company's history, inspiration, competition, strengths, values, and specific product offerings. I used this information to guide my design approach and ensure that the final visual identity would resonate with the target audience and align with the brand’s goals. I then researched the competitive landscape to understand industry trends and identify how PORTA-CAMSS could stand out. This preparation phase also included brainstorming and sketching initial logo concepts, each aimed at visually communicating the company's unique selling points, such as the quick deployment and modular nature of their products.
How did I put my plan into action?
Once I had a clear direction, I moved into the design process, creating various symbolic representations as directed by the client. During a critique session with the CEO, I received valuable feedback regarding the clarity of the logo’s symbolism, which led to further refinement. Taking this feedback into account, I conducted additional research and developed a revised solution: a logo featuring an origami bear, symbolizing the customizable, collapsible, and protective qualities of the product. Alongside the logo, I also refined the wordmark to ensure it better reflected the product's efficiency and modernity. After presenting the updated concept to the CEO, who expressed excitement about the revised direction, I focused on fine-tuning details such as padding, color selection, and creating camouflage-patterned versions for specific applications.
What were my results and lessons?
The final brand identity successfully met the client's expectations and aligned with the company's vision. The CEO was pleased with the result, particularly the way the origami bear conveyed the flexibility and robustness of the product. One of the challenges I faced during this process was ensuring the logo worked across different formats and scales, from digital applications to large-scale physical installations on the products themselves. Additionally, incorporating the client’s feedback while maintaining the integrity of the design was an ongoing challenge. Through this experience, I learned the importance of iterative design, clear communication, and balancing client input with creative vision to produce a solution that is both functional and visually compelling.
