Balance UT
December 2023 - Present | Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Claritas
What is this project?
As a chair and the director of design for Balance UT, a wellness-focused club within the Live Well UT organization at the University of Tampa, I adapt my design process to meet the specific needs of my target audience while ensuring consistency across the organization’s visual communication. The first step in my process is conducting audience research. I leverage platforms like Claritas Segments to gain insights into the demographics, psychographics, behaviors, and communication preferences of University of Tampa students. Additionally, I analyze the design strategies of competing products created by other clubs within the Live Well UT organization, which helps me understand the broader context and how my designs can stand out.
How did I prepare?
After gathering valuable data, I begin by sketching initial product drafts. In these drafts, I ensure that essential details, such as the organization’s logos, event information, and any relevant imagery, are clearly presented. Once I have a few promising sketches, I digitize them and start working through multiple rounds of iteration. This process involves experimenting with various layout options, color schemes, and typography to find the best solution that aligns with the goals of Balance UT. Throughout this phase, I continuously refine the design based on my creative judgment, as well as input from my peers.
How did I put my plan into action?
Seeking feedback from my peers is an important part of my design process. I find that their perspectives offer valuable insights that help identify areas for improvement, which I may not have noticed on my own. I take their critiques seriously and use them to enhance the design. After incorporating the necessary adjustments, I finalize the design and submit it to the Balance UT marketing director for approval. This ensures that the final product not only aligns with the club’s vision but also meets its specific objectives.
What were my results and lessons?
Through this process, I have learned the importance of adaptability and responsiveness in design. By staying open to feedback and making iterative improvements, I am able to create designs that effectively communicate the wellness-focused mission of Balance UT while resonating with the target audience. My approach balances creativity with practicality, ensuring that each design serves its intended purpose and contributes to the success of the organization’s initiatives.
